TRINITY COLLEGE

A blowup of one of the illuminations of the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells contains a Latin text of the four Gospels copied and richly decorated by Irish Monks around the year 800 AD. It contains 340 folios (680 pages). Since the 1660s it has been at Trinity College and has been exhibited since the mid-nineteenth century. "Picturing the Word" for those who cannot read.

For conservation reasons it is bound in four volumes, two of which are normally on display, one volume opened at a major decorated page, the other at a page of text.
